So you may not be Justin Bieber or have a talking dog, but let’s say you do have a top-notch company or small business and are looking to promote it using video.

Have no fear! Here at Formstack, we have lots of experience making promotional videos. Below are some of our top tips for how to make your corporate videos stand out among a sea of viral wannabes.

Formstack tips on video views

  1. Think story. Take your viewers on a journey. If you must tell your viewers your corporate numbers, do so in a story. Your viewers want to be entertained so it’s vital to take an often-dull topic and turn it into an interesting story that will easily grab viewers’ attention. Animation and motion graphics, among others, are video techniques that can help achieve this. If you are uploading a video to YouTube, think about using strategically-placed video annotations to add call-outs or additional elements to the story you are telling.
  2. 15 Seconds. The rule of 15? It exists. In “videoland,” it’s important that you change the pace, rhythm and/or content rotation every 15 seconds. Granted, these changes do not have to be drastic, but something to retain the attention of your viewers. You can make a ten-minute video feel like five, just by changing the pace. Or, you can create “chapters” with new themes, which allows for music or color changes. Remember to keep your video engaging and you will see repeat viewings.
  3. Be Mindful of Production Value, But Don’t Break the Bank. It’s easy to create a high-quality video using just a few basic tools, including a video camera, basic sound equipment — no Hollywood director or production crew required. A simple white backdrop is also perfect for instructional or product videos. Using an office space to create your video? Film a quick sample of the space, and then review the video and edit the contents of the space with a critical eye, removing any elements that might be a distraction. The only thing that is going to be especially crucial when it comes to production value is having a clean audio. These days, viewers will be somewhat forgiving of the space where a video is filmed (interviews shown live at tradeshows are not out of the ordinary), but they will exit your video immediately if the sound is poor or inaudible.
  4. Title Optimization. If you are uploading your videos to video content-sharing sites such as YouTube, be sure to use relevant target keywords to optimize your video titles. To optimize the title, use terms that are easily searchable and always use important keywords near the start of the title rather than the end. There’s a delicate balance between piquing a searcher’s interest and talking to the search engines, so be sure to pay attention to both when titling your videos. The recent trend is toward titling videos with phrases such as “exclusive” and “behind the scenes” (or think of other attention-grabbing—but accurate—adjectives).

These aren’t all the rules for making an awesome corporate video, but they should help in reaching a higher number of video views and receiving a more positive response from your audience. If you remember these important steps, you will be on track to corporate video success.
